Description: Fuel models describe the composition and characteristics of fire fuels. The models are specific categories of burnable fuels based on descriptions of live and dead vegetation that represent distinct fuel types, size classes and load distributions (amounts), and, this particular set of models includes moisture variations and unique fuel differences useful for more precise modeling [Landfire 2016, 40 Scott & Burgan (2005) Fire Behavior Fuel Models]. Fuels and other elements of the fuelscape in the PNW Quantitative Wildfire Risk Assessment were extensively reviewed and refined by local expert consultation. Additionally, the fuelscape was updated to account for wildfire disturbances that occurred through 2017.

Fm91, NB1: Fm91, NB1 - Urban

Fm92, NB2: Fm92, NB2 - Snow/Ice

Fm93, NB3: Fm93, NB3 - Agriculture

Fm98, NB8: Fm98, NB8 - Water

Fm99, NB9: Fm99, NB9 - Barren

Fm101, GR1: Fm101, GR1 - Grass is short naturally or heavy grazing, predicted rate of fire spread and flame length is low

Fm102, GR2: Fm102, GR2 - Primarily grass with some small amounts of fine, dead fuel, any shrubs do not affect fire behavior

Fm103, GR3: Fm103, GR3 - Continuous, coarse humid climate grass, any shrubs do not affect fire behavior

Fm104, GR4: Fm104, GR4 - Continuous, dry climate grass, fuelbed depth about 2 feet

Fm121, GS1: Fm121, GS1 - Shrubs are about 1 foot high, grass load is low, spread rate moderate and flame length is low

Fm122, GS2: Fm122, GS2 - Shrubs are 1-3 feet high, grass load is moderate, spread rate high and flame length is moderate

Fm123, GS3: Fm123, GS3 - Moderate grass/shrub load, grass/shrub depth is less than 2 feet, spread rate is high and flame length is moderate

Fm141, SH1: Fm141, SH1 - Woody shrubs and shrub litter, fuelbed depth about 1 foot, may be some grass, spread rate and flame low

Fm142, SH2: Fm142, SH2 - Woody shrubs and shrub litter, fuelbed depth about 1 foot, no grass, spread rate and flame low

Fm143, SH3: Fm143, SH3 - Woody shrubs and shrub litter, possible pine overstory, fuelbed depth 2-3 feet, spread rate and flame low

Fm144, SH4: Fm144, SH4 - Woody shrubs and shrub litter, low to moderate load, possible pine overstory, fuelbed depth about 3 feet, spread rate high and flame moderate

Fm145, SH5: Fm145, SH5 - Grass and shrubs combined, heavy load with depth greater than 2 feet, spread rate and flame very high

Fm146, SH6: Fm146, SH6 - Woody shrubs and shrub litter, dense shrubs, little or no herbaceous fuel, depth about 2 feet, spread rate and flame high

Fm147, SH7: Fm147, SH7 - Woody shrubs and shrub litter, very heavy shrub load, depth 4-6 feet, spread rate somewhat lower than SH6 and flame very high

Fm161, TU1: Fm161, TU1 - Low load of grass and/or shrub with litter, spread rate and flame low

Fm162, TU2: Fm162, TU2 - Moderate litter load with some shrub, spread rate moderate and flame low

Fm163, TU3: Fm163, TU3 - Moderate forest litter with some grass and shrub, spread rate high and flame moderate

Fm165, TU5: Fm165, TU5 - Heavy forest litter with shrub or small tree understory, spread rate and flame moderate

Fm181, TL1: Fm181, TL1 - Compact forest litter, light to moderate load, 1-2 inches deep, may represent a recent burn, spread rate and flame low

Fm182, TL2: Fm182, TL2 - Broadleaf, hardwood litter, spread rate and flame low

Fm183, TL3: Fm183, TL3 - Moderate load conifer litter, light load of coarse fuels, spread rate and flame low

Fm184, TL4: Fm184, TL4 - Moderate load of fine litter and coarse fuels, small diameter downed logs, spread rate and flame low

Fm185, TL5: Fm185, TL5 - High load conifer litter, light slash or dead fuel, spread rate and flame low

Fm186, TL6: Fm186, TL6 - Moderate load broadleaf litter, spread rate and flame moderate

Fm187, TL7: Fm187, TL7 - Heavy load forest litter, larger diameter downed logs, spread rate and flame low

Fm188, TL8: Fm188, TL8 - Moderate load long needle pine litter, may have small amounts of herbaceous fuel, spread rate moderate and flame low

Fm189, TL9: Fm189, TL9 - Very high load fluffy broadleaf litter, may be heavy needle drape, spread rate and flame moderate

Fm202, SB2: Fm202, SB2 - Moderate dead down activity fuel or light blowdown, 7-12 t/ac, 0-3 inch diameter class, depth about 1 foot, blowdown scattered with many still standing, spread rate and flame low

(Pacific Northwest Quantitative Wildfire Risk Assessment, USFS, 2018.
